Tips for Saving Data While Traveling

Practical tips to reduce mobile data usage and make your eSIM plan last longer during your trip.

Before You Go

  1. Download offline maps for your destination in Google Maps or Apple Maps. Offline maps use zero data for navigation and are essential for travelers.
  2. Pre-download entertainment: movies, podcasts, music playlists, and e-books before you leave. Streaming is the biggest data drain while traveling.
  3. Update all your apps before departing. App updates can be hundreds of megabytes and will eat through your data plan if they run in the background.
  4. Save important documents (boarding passes, hotel confirmations, itineraries) as PDFs or screenshots so you can access them offline.
  5. Research free Wi-Fi spots at your destination. Airports, hotels, cafes, and shopping malls often provide free Wi-Fi that you can use for heavier tasks.

Managing Data Usage

  1. Monitor your data consumption daily: on iPhone go to Settings > Cellular; on Android go to Settings > Network > Data Usage. Reset the counter at the start of your trip.
  2. Disable automatic app updates over mobile data: Settings > App Store > turn off "App Updates" under Cellular Data, or on Android: Play Store > Settings > Auto-update apps > Over Wi-Fi only.
  3. Turn off background app refresh for apps you do not need while traveling: Settings > General > Background App Refresh. Keep it on only for essential apps like maps and messaging.
  4. Disable automatic photo and video backups to iCloud or Google Photos over cellular. Back up your photos when you are on Wi-Fi instead.
  5. Use data compression in your browser. Chrome has a Lite Mode and Opera has a built-in data saver that can reduce browsing data usage by up to 50%.

App Settings

  1. Set WhatsApp and Telegram to download media only on Wi-Fi: open the app settings and look for "Media auto-download" to change it to Wi-Fi only.
  2. Lower video quality on YouTube and streaming apps. Switch to 480p or lower when on mobile data — you will barely notice the difference on a phone screen.
  3. Use WhatsApp or FaceTime Audio for calls instead of regular phone calls. VoIP calls use about 0.5 MB per minute — far less than carrier voice roaming.
  4. Disable autoplay videos on social media apps. On Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok, turn off auto-play in settings to prevent videos from loading automatically.
  5. Use lightweight versions of popular apps when available: Facebook Lite, Twitter/X Lite, and Google Go use significantly less data than their full versions.

Emergency Connectivity

  1. If your data runs out, purchase a top-up plan from your MyeSIM account. The new data is added to your existing eSIM — no new QR code scan needed.
  2. Save the local emergency number for your destination. Emergency calls (like 911 or 112) work even without an active data plan on most networks.
  3. Keep a portable Wi-Fi hotspot as a backup for critical work. Hotels and co-working spaces usually offer reliable Wi-Fi for heavier data needs.
  4. Many airports and transit stations offer free Wi-Fi. Use these windows to sync email, upload photos, or download content for the next leg of your journey.
  5. Share your eSIM data via personal hotspot with travel companions if needed. One good eSIM plan can often cover 2-3 devices for basic browsing and messaging.
